The contents of the HDA can be discovered through browsing hierarchies
or searching the metadata.
| The arrangement of books on a library shelf follow a numerical classification
scheme, typically the Dewey Decimal of Library of Congress. Files
in the HDA are arranged according to a topical classification scheme.
Under the broad "Digital Collections" are (or will be) listed
the major entities on the Calvin campus: currently Academic Departments,
Meeter Center, and Heritage Hall. As the figure to the right illustrates,
topical breakdowns follow. |

The Basic Search allows you to type words or phrases in the search box
and click the "Search" button. The search engine will check
all the metadata fields for the search terms. e.g., london stage

The following rules apply
- Entering multiple words will automatically search for the words
as a phrase.
- and retrieves items with both search terms in the record, e.g.,
london and stage
- or retrieves items with either search term in the record, e.g.,
london or stage
- not retrieves items with the first but not the second term
not in the record, e.g., london not stage

The Advanced Search allows you to specify which metadata fields you wish
to find specific words or phrases. Each of these fields can be combined
using the Boolean operator menus
- Keyword: words in any of the fields
- Creator: the person or entity primarily responsible for the
creation of the original resource
- Title: the title of the digital file
- Description: a brief description of the contents of the file.
May include names of people included (as in photographed persons)
- Subjects: Library of Congress subject headings
- Coverage: Other subject keywords, often based on chronology
(e.g., modern era) or geography (greek empire)

Each image in the collection is assigned a unique identification number,
such as CAS137. If you know the id number of digital file, the ID Search
is the quickest and most efficient way to retrieve it.
