On Thursday, March 3, the Kuyers Institute will be hosting a lecture by the Rev. Isaac S. Wheigar at 3:30 PM in Chapel Undercroft on the campus of Calvin College.

The firstborn son of an African tribal chief's head wife, Rev. Wheigar is the national superintendent of the Wesleyan Church of Liberia and a part-time instructor at the Wesleyan Bible College of Liberia. He is also the founder and executive director of the Association of Christian Schooling, a non-denominational, non-profit organization enabling Christian educators and schools in Liberia; currently, the organization works with more than 50 grassroots Christian schools in Liberia.

Rev. Wheigar will be speaking on the topic of education in Liberia. Before the civil war, the educational system faced a high illiteracy rate, poor access, and declining quality, a situation that may have been a major factor in the outbreak of the war. Some fourteen years later, Liberia's schools are idle, stripped of their furnishings, illiteracy has exceeded 75%, and the nation is plagued by poverty and disease. Rev. Wheigar will explain how Christian schools with properly trained teachers can transform the population and enable the nation to enjoy sovereignty, independence, and economic emancipation.

The lecture is free of charge and open to the public. A question-and-answer period will follow.

Video and audio recordings of this lecture can be accessed at this page.
