Conference and Call for Papers: "Education as Formation: Christian Approaches"
There are long-standing debates between those who urge that teaching should focus on intellectual matters and disavow claims to shape students in broader ways, and those who view learning as bound up with moral and spiritual formation. Amid the arguments over basic principles, there remains a need for better understanding of the kinds of formation actually taking place as teachers teach and students learn. The Kuyers Institute for Christian Teaching and Learning will host a conference October 6-8, 2011, with a focus on Christian approaches to education as formation. Papers should focus on some aspect of pedagogy in relation to student formation; both theoretical studies and accounts of practice are welcome. Questions that may be addressed include (but are not restricted to)
  • What kinds of formation take place, and how, in learning venues focused on academic learning?
  • What Christian practices can help to frame teaching and learning in ways that are healthy for formation?
  • What is the relationship between moral and spiritual formation, growth in knowledge, and critical thinking?
  • What is the relationship between curricular and cocurricular learning in terms of student formation?
  • How are intellectual, moral, or spiritual virtues fostered or hindered in educational settings?

Paper proposals of 1-2 pages, including 100-word abstracts, should be sent via e-mail to seminars@calvin.edu no later than April 15, 2011. Notification of acceptance will be made by May 15, 2011. Additional information regarding the conference is available at the Calvin Seminars site.
