Math Curriculum Project
Many Christian schoolteachers in the U.S. and abroad have expressed a need for supplementary materials that can help them teach middle and high school mathematics from a Christian outlook. Most are constrained by standardized curricula; often, even the choice of textbook is outside their control. Nevertheless, many of them are eager to complement these (usually secular) curricula with a distinctly Christian perspective.

The Kuyers Institute is currently funding a two-year project to create such supplementary materials. Having begun in July 2004, a team of six math professors and teachers will write and test materials designed to be used in conjunction with standard high and middle school curricula. Units will include lesson plans and other support materials, including the development of an appropriate pedagogy as teachers may not be accustomed to some of the characteristics of the approach.

Similar in approach to the Charis project sponsored by the Stapleford Centre, the materials produced will be available for download free of charge at the Kuyers Institute website and will be based on a broad Christian framework that

  • upholds a view of truth that avoids both Enlightenment positivism and Postmodern skepticism
  • shows a commitment to the relationship between mathematics and history, the arts, ethical systems, social justice, etc.
  • teaches that mathematics can inspire delight and awe, pointing beyond itself to God and not merely serving as a means to acquire knowledge and wealth
  • views math teachers as entrusted with a valuable gift and accountable to God for their stewardship of it
