Public Lecture on the Reformed "Call" to Teach
| Clarence Joldersma |
On Wednesday, November 17, the Kuyers Institute and the Calvin Center for Christian Scholarship will sponsor a lecture by Dr. Clarence Joldersma, Professor of Education at Calvin College. The title of Dr. Joldersma's lecture will be "Not What or How, but Why? Subjectivity, Obligation, and 'Christian Distinctiveness' in Higher Education." This lecture will argue that the Reformed concept of a "call" to teach ought to be conceptualized in respect to the subjectivity of the people involved, both those teaching and those taught. Dr. Joldersma will develop the idea of a responsible subject as the condition that makes viable the distinctiveness about the "call" to teach, suggesting that God's call manifests itself through the face of the student, in the asymmetric relation between the teacher and the student as the other. The lecture will be held at 3:30 p.m. in the Meeter Center Lecture Hall and will be free to the public. |
