On Tuesday, April 18, Dr. Carolyne Call, the director of the Office for Civic and Social Engagement at Saint Mary's College (Notre Dame, Indiana), will be speaking at Calvin College. The presentation will be held at 3:30 p.m. in the Meeter Center lecture hall and will be free of charge, open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

What does it mean to say that a class is "intellectually safe"? How do students define intellectual safety and what kinds of classroom experiences are associated with safety or threat? Dr. Call will present her findings from research with over 100 students on this issue. Far from being equivalent to an easy classroom, the safe classroom offers students the opportunity to express themselves freely, improve critical thinking skills, and challenge their epistemological assumptions. Findings also support the idea that quality teaching has more to do with the internal life of the instructor than with technique or even content. This promises to be a lively discussion on the nature of pedagogy
