On Tuesday, October 19, the Kuyers Institute will host a public lecture by Dr. Mark Pike of Plymouth University in England. Dr. Pike is the recent author of Teaching Secondary English and has published extensively on the relationship between aesthetic experience and spiritual development. His lecture at Calvin College will be titled "From Personal to Spiritual Transaction: A Model of Readers' Responses to Literary Texts" and will explore how, in the light of recent classroom-based research, spiritual and moral development can be fostered through reading and the teaching of reading. The lecture is free and open to the public; it should be of particular interest to all educators who teach subjects in which reading plays a significant role. The lecture will be at 3:30 p.m. in the Commons Annex Lecture Hall.
