Alan Jacobs to Deliver Lecture on Charitable Teaching, April 19, 2005

| Alan Jacobs |
On Tuesday, April 19, 2005, the Kuyers Institute will host a lecture by Dr. Alan Jacobs, Professor of English at Wheaton College.
"Charity in all things" is the Christian's watchword; no aspect of our lives is exempt from the law of love. Long ago St. Augustine claimed that any reader of the Bible whose interpretation does not build up the love of God and love of neighbor is without true understanding; but even (or especially!) as readers of "secular" texts we must strive to be charitable. This is a difficult task, but even more difficult is the task of the Christian teacher: to exemplify charitable reading to students and if possible to teach it. But can charitable reading be taught?
The lecture will be held at 3:30 PM in the Commons Annex Lecture Hall, on the campus of Calvin College. The public is invited to attend free of charge. Refreshments will be provided. |
