How does the idea of humans being made in the image of God affect teaching and learning? How does education relate to redemption? How should Christians view the curriculum and its various special areas of learning? What is the role of classical literature in a Christian curriculum? All of these issues and more are discussed in John Amos Comenius' influential work, The Great Didactic. Comenius has been called the father of modern education, and educationalists have debated whether he was the greatest educational thinker in history. The Great Didactic is his systematic exposition of his educational principles and goals, consistently relating these back to theological reflection. His writings remain important both for their significance for the history of education and for their present-day value as a challenge to explore the connections between a Christian understanding of personhood and the shape of schools and teaching. Now you can read The Great Didactic as an e-book.

The Great Didactic was translated into English and published with introductory essays by M. W. Keatinge in 1896. This translation has long been out of print, though a facsimile edition is available.
