|Reviews and Accolades|
The January Series staff receives many encouraging emails and letters in support of the Series. We would like to share some of these responses with you:
I have been attending the Series for years. This year was, by far, in my humble opinion, the best. I cried harder, laughed louder and said, "Oh my gosh, I had no idea" more than ever before.
I grew up as an Air Force brat and reluctantly returned to Grand Rapids, my parents' hometown, after having seen the world. Your efforts, year after year, bring the world to Grand Rapids. Thank you.
I can't tell you how much I love the idea of this series! It's just so intellectually stimulating. I really, really appreciate you broadcasting live over the internet. I stumbled upon your site... I don't know how, but I have shared your information with my fellow homeschool mothers.
I'm particularly interested in today's speaker, Linda Silverman. Almost drove in from Chicago to hear her, but heard about a possible snowstorm so... live audio is the next best thing!
Thank you again for all your work towards making this wonderful program happen. I look forward to hearing Linda Silverman speak.
Greetings to the January Series team from Shanghai. I just wanted to drop you a note to let you know how glad I am that Calvin makes the J-Series available around the world. I found both Friday's speaker (Ms. Winner) and Juan Enriquez highly stimulating. I was very impressed by Dr. Jenkins from Thursday. His message touched me deeply as I can see and feel the very things he talked about in the Christian community here in Shanghai and elsewhere in China. I really only have time to listen on the weekends, but I look forward to catching up on the coming week's speakers next weekend. Your work is a blessing to me. Being able to listen online allows me to feel like I am right back at home at Calvin.
I attended almost all of your presentations last year and was impressed with the entire experience. The expertise of each presenter was clearly evident, as was the variety of subjects. You do an incredible service to our community! I am newly retired, and can now take advantage of your skill at organizing these speakers with no cost to your audience. It is truly a New Year's gift. Thank you very much.
Last year I attended Paul Farmer's lecture during the January Series and was immediately drawn to his message. I was trying to discern what major I should be and I felt a pull to model a vocation after Paul Farmers. Over the summer I finished Pathologies of Power and Mountains Beyond Mountains . I consider Farmer to be my inspiration and direction in Public Health. I am now a Political Science Major with minors in Sociology and Urban Studies with the intent to become involved in Public Policy in Health Related Interests in Third World countries.
I do love your January Series... it greatly enhances intellectual life in West Michigan, encourages thoughtful discussions in many venues, strong-minded letters to the Public Pulse, and interesting discussions (arguments?) over Sunday supper at our house. I don't always agree with the point of view or politics or religious conviction of your speakers, but that is what makes up our diversity, uniqueness and opens minds to new ideas and thoughts other than our own. That's how we live and learn.
Keep up the good work, and I look forward to the next January Series.
