Frank Deford is especially
known for his writing on sports issues such as sport as culture and sport
in society. Six times he has been voted Sportswriter of the Year and twice
named U.S. Magazine Writer of the Year. Deford is also a member of the
Hall of Fame of the National Association of Sportscasters and Sportswriters.
He is a sports writer and contributing editor for Newsweek Magazine
and for Sports Illustrated and is sports commentator for National
Public Radio’s Morning Edition. Deford’s lecture will address the
American athlete as American hero. Americans seem to need heroes more
than most other cultures and we are turning more and more to sports to
find them. What is it that makes this so? What types of athletes become
heroes and not just stars?
