What is ResNet?
ResNet is the residential computing network provided to on-campus students. If you own a personal computer you can connect your computer to the college network and internet using ResNet.

How do I connect to ResNet?
To connect to ResNet, you are required to execute a series security checks to make sure your computer meets our minimum security requirements. Complete the following steps to begin this process:
- Make sure your network interface card (NIC) is properly installed.
- Plug your computer into a port using a Category 5 Ethernet cable.
- Open your preferred web browser.
- Log in using your KnightVision username and passphrase.
- Complete the registration and scanning process.
- If necessary, update your computer to meet any missing minimum requirements detected during the first scan, and run another scan. (You may have to repeat this step until your computer passes all the minimum requirements).
- Restart your computer.

Does ResNet use my phone line?
No. Instead of using a modem, your computer is connected to the data jack in the room, leaving your phone lines available.

Can I connect my computer to ResNet from a room or apartment other than my own?
Once you have registered and scanned your computer, you may connect your registered computer to ResNet from any jack in the residence halls and apartments. back to top
What can I do with my ResNet connection?
Once connected, you will have full access to the world wide web except those areas filtered or blocked by our firewall. Upon signing up for ResNet, a student is expected to follow Calvin's Policy on Responsible Use of Technology.
If you have questions about services which are available, please call the HelpDesk at x6-8555 or e-mail suggestions to resnet@calvin.edu.

Can I have a web page? A web-server?
All students are given 95MB of space on their Calvin webpub account that can be used to set up their own web page and to receive email. To request a web server, complete the request form and submit it to the CIT receptionist during business hours.

Can I print to the labs in the residence hall labs or to other campus printers?
No, students do not have access to campus printers from ResNet. To print, you may save your file and print it from a campus computer lab.

What is the filter? What services are filtered? Why can't I access some web pages?
Some filtering of the internet occurs on ResNet. Decisions concerning filtering on ResNet are made in the Student Life Division. Students or parents with concerns should address those concerns to the Residence Life Office, not to Calvin Information Technology. For more information, see the filter page.

What if I need to look at filtered pages for a class or other legitimate reason?
Web access is filtered in the residence halls, but not in the library or in the Information Technology Center (ITC). You can access filtered material for academic and research purposes in the ITC. You should tell the student assistant your reason for viewing the material so that you are not questioned. You can also request to have a site unblocked.

I think there's a problem with my cable or my jack. How can I tell?
- Check your ethernet cable to make sure you are using a Category 5 RJ45 Ethernet cable. A phone cord WILL NOT work.
- Try plugging your cable into the other jack in your room to see if that one works.
- Try using the cable of a friend or roommate whose ResNet is working. If his/her cable works with your computer, your cable needs to be replaced.
- Look at the back of your computer. Locate the area where the cable attaches to the back of your network adapter. There should be at least one, and probably two, lights on the back of your network card. If no lights are lit, it is possible your network card is not correctly installed.
- In general, if at least one light is flashing, your jack is working and your card is receiving information.
- If all the lights are solid, then your card isn't receiving any information and there could be a problem with your jack. However, this isn't always true for all brands of NICs.
- If in doubt, call the HelpDesk at x6-8555, and we'll send someone out to check your jack.
