Novell Accounts for Students FAQ

Novell accounts are provided to each Calvin student as a location to store academic and course-related documents and personal files on Calvin's network. Students can access his or her Novell accounts by logging into Novell on campus, and/or by accessing their Novell account via the internet using NetStorage.

Space Allocation

How much data space do I have?
Each student is allocated 500 MB of storage space.

Can I have more than the allocated space?
No. Each student is provided with 500 MB of storage space.

Can I "borrow" space from my friend?
No. Each student is allotted 500 MB that can only be accessed by the individual student.

Will I receive a warning message if my online storage is about to run out of space?
No. You need to check and monitor this on your own.

How do I monitor the amount of space I have used in my Novell account?
To check the amount of free space in your Novell account you must be on a Windows computer.

1. Go to My Computer.
2. Right-click on your Home drive (username on 'Legion\Users\Home').
3. Select Properties.

Does this storage space include my email and webpub space?
No. In addition to your 500 MB of storage space, you also have 35 MB of space for email and your webpage on Calvin’s web server.

Where can I access my Novell account?
You will be able to access your Novell account from most computers on campus, such as in the ITC, departmental labs and the library. You will also be able to access your Novell account (NetStorage) from any computer with internet access. You will not be able to access your Novell account from some special use work stations on campus, such as the InfoXpress stations.

How secure is the data stored in my Novell account?
A password must be provided in order to access your online storage space. The file space itself is reliable, however, CIT does not back up your data in any manner. It is important that you back up your data on a regular basis by saving your files to a DVD, USB drive, or CD-ROM.

Can I open my storage space for access by other students?
No. Only you will be provided with access to your storage space, which can only be accessed with a password.

What can I do to let someone else access my data stored in online storage?
While you cannot grant someone access to your Novell account, you can send them files as an email attachment or transfer the files using removable media, such as a DVD, a USB drive, or a CD-ROM.

Will my professors have access to my files?
No. Because your Novell account is password protected, you will be the only person who has access to your account. You may, however, submit assignments to your professors via KnightVision or by using your webmail.

Can I copy or move files from my Novell account to someone else's account?
You may not move files directly from one account to another. You may, however, send files or documents as an email attachment, or transfer the files using removable media, such as a DVD, a USB drive, or a CD-ROM.

How many computers can I have logged into my Novell account at one time?
You may be logged into your Novell account on three computers concurrently. If you try to login from a fourth computer, you will be denied access.

What happens if I forget to log off?
Unless you deliberately log off, you will stay logged on. It is very important you log off each time you are done using your Novell account, especially if you are using a public computer. If you don’t log off, someone else could deliberately or inadvertently access your account, delete files or cause other problems. You are responsible for your storage space and all of the files that are stored there.

Whose responsibility is it if someone accesses my data and damages or removes it?
You are responsible for all the activity within your Novell account. You can protect your account by selecting a secure password, logging off each time you are done using your account, and by backing up your data regularly. Calvin College is not responsible for activity within your storage space.

How long will my data be available for my access after I graduate from Calvin?
All of your Calvin accounts, including access to your Novell account, will expire on October 1st of the year following your graduation. For more information, go to Email and Computer Access After Graduation.

Data and Storage

What kind of data am I allowed to store in my storage space?
Your online storage spaces is provided as a location for you to store academic and course-related documents, as well as other personal files, such as your resume or a backup of your personal webpage. All files stored in your Novell account should meet Calvin’s Policy on Responsible Use of Technology

Will my data be backed up periodically?
The data saved in your Novell account will not be backed up. You are responsible for backing up your data on a regular basis.

If I lose my data, will I be able to restore it?
If you delete a file or folder that has been saved, you can use the Salvage File feature to try to restore the file or folder. The Salvage File feature, however, may not always work. To salvage a file or folder, follow the instructions below.

What if I inadvertently delete a file within a folder from my Home drive?
These instructions are for a Windows computer

1. Right-click on the folder in your Home drive.
2. Select Salvage Files.
3. Highlight the deleted file.
4. Click Salvage File.
5. Click Close.

What if I inadvertently delete a folder from my Home drive?
These instructions are for a Windows computer

1. Right-click on your Home drive.
2. Select Salvage Files.
3. Highlight the deleted folder.
4. Click Salvage File.
5. Click Close.

NOTE: The Salvage File feature is not available using NetStorage.

Will I lose my data if I get disconnected or log off accidentally while I’m editing a file?
If you log off accidentally or get disconnected, any data that has not been saved will be lost. Make sure to save regularly and back up your files.

NOTE: When using some applications in the computers labs, you may not be able to access your Home drive from the applications. If this happens,

Printing

Where can I print?
When on campus, you can print to the printer in the computer lab or department that you are working from. Student Employees may need to authenticate to the printer in the department for which they work. For directions to authenticate to a departmental printer, see Student Employee Printer Installation.

NetStorage

Where can I access my NetStorage?
You can access your Novell account via NetStorage from any web browser connected to the internet.

What if I forget my password?

Will I lose my data if I am disconnected or log off accidentally while I’m editing a file?
In order to edit a document that has been stored in your Home drive (Home@CALVIN.edu) using NetStorage, you must download the file to your computer before editing. If you log off accidentally or get disconnected while editing, it won’t affect the document that you are working on.

Where can I print?
When you are logged into NetStorage from a personal computer you will only be able to print to the printer installed on that computer. When you are logged into Novell (not NetStorage) in a public computer lab you can print to the printers in that room.
