FAQ: What faculty need to know about student Novell accounts

All Calvin College students are given a Novell account; a location where they can store files on the campus fileserver. If you hold classes in a computer lab or classroom or you want a student to make a presentation in a Smart Classroom your students can login to their personal Novell accounts and access their academic and course-related documents and files.

  • A student has access to his or her home directory in Novell by logging into Novell from most college-owned computers, and/or by accessing their Novell account via the internet using NetStorage. (http://netstorage.calvin.edu).
  • Logging in from a college-owned computer on campus:
When a student logs into Novell from a college-owned computer on campus they have access to
    • their home directory f:\ drive.
    • to limerick from their g:\ drive.
  • Logging in from NetStorage:
When a student logs into Novell from NetStorage they only have access to their home directory f:\ drive.
  • The home drive (f:\) is a secure location for students to save documents without worry of others accessing their files like they could on Limerick.
  • Shared space on Limerick: Students have access to the file space on Limerick through their g:\ drive. This access is available only on campus and not available through NetStorage (access through the Internet). Although access to Limerick will continue next year (04-05) the drive mapping may change.
  • Faculty may still request shared file space on Limerick if they require students to share files. Please call the HelpDesk at x6-8555 to place this request. If you currently have shared file space on Limerick that space will continue to be available.
  • If your course requirements for your student's network storage will exceed the 300 MB of storage space that each student is provided please contact the HelpDesk.
  • Printing: Students who login to their Novell accounts from a computer lab or classroom on campus will automatically be able to print to the printer in that room.
  • Students may not share their username and password with anyone. That means faculty and other students cannot read files stored in a student's Novell account. Please read the Policy on Responsible Use of Technology.
  • From Office and Macromedia software students can save directly to their f:\ or g:\ drive. However, there are a few software programs that won't allow students access to their f:\ or g:\ drive from within the software application. If you encounter this problem please have the student save the file to the desktop and then move the file to their f:\ drive using My Computer. We are working to resolve this issue.
  • NOTE: Please remind your students to Log Off the computer before they leave the classroom.
