A security step we have taken requires you to make a VPN connection to Calvin before logging in to Novell from off-campus. This is only available to faculty and staff.
- From the Novell Client for Windows login screen, click on Workstation only then log in.
- Make your VPN connection.
- Once connected to Calvin via VPN right-click on the red N in the system tray and select Novell login.
- Log in to Novell.
Make a VPN Connection
The steps you follow to create a VPN connection depend on the view you have setup for your Start menu.
Classic View
- From the Start Menu > Settings > Control Panel. Double-click on Network
Connections.

- Select Create a new connection.
- When the Wizard runs select Connect to the network at my workplace. Click Next.

- In the next window select Virtual Private network connection. Click Next.

- Go to step 4
Windows XP Default View
- From the Start Menu > Control Panel > Network
Connections

- Next, select the task of Creating a connection to the network at
your workplace.

- In the New Connection Wizard dialog box select Virtual
Private Network connection.
Click Next.

- Go to Step 4

- Under Company Name, enter Calvin College VPN. Click Next to continue.

The hostname for the server is vpn.calvin.edu. Click Next.

You are done with the setup process! We recommend you add a shortcut to your desktop for easy access to the VPN connection in the future. Click Finish to bring up the connection manager.

- On the Connection screen enter your Calvin username and password.
Click Connect.

- Congratulations! You have successfully established a VPN connection to Calvin's campus.
To establish a connection at anytime after this, double-click on the shortcut you created on your desktop or look for the VPN connection in the Network Connections of the Control Panel.
Error 734 Message
Currently, some people are having issues connecting to the VPN. They are getting an error after "Verifying username and password..." that says this: "Error 734: The PPP link control protocol was terminated." Most of these errors can be resolved by turning off LCP extensions.
- Go back into Network Connections.
- Find your Calvin College VPN icon, right-click and chose Properties.
- Navigate to the Networking tab, and click the Settings button under Type of VPN.
- In the PPP settings screen, un-check Enable LCP extensions and click OK.
- Click OK one more time to close the Properties window.
- Re-try connecting to the VPN.
