What should I do if my guest requests to connect their computer or equipment to our wired network?
If your guest will be using a designated office, conference room, or other area and require wired network access (via Ethernet cable) for their own computers or other equipment, please contact the HelpDesk at least a week in advance of the arrival date so that we can assess your needs and provide an appropriate solution.
How can my guest log in to a Calvin computer?
If your guest will be using an existing Calvin computer in a designated space, contact the HelpDesk for the visitor login. While the visitor login provides access to use the computer and Internet, there is no printing capability or access to network drives.
Can my guest use wireless on campus?
If your guest will be bringing his or her own laptop computer and/or mobile device to use on wireless, please refer to the table of available wireless locations. Note: wireless is currently only available at specific locations, not campus-wide. The Guest network requires authentication every 24 hours..
How can my guest access the Internet in a Smart Classroom or Smart Space?
If your guest will be bringing his or her own laptop computer for use in a Smart Classroom or Smart Space, there should be a bundle of cables hanging over the desk in the room and labelled for laptop use. This bundle includes a VGA cable for connecting to the projector, an audio cable for sound, and an Ethernet cable for Internet access. If your guest would like to show a presentation that requires Internet access (such as retrieving a file from their e-mail or playing a YouTube video), he or she should use the spare Ethernet cable for access. There is no setup or authentication required.
Your guest will also need to make sure the laptop or mobile device has a VGA output or VGA adapter. All of our Smart Classrooms and most of our Smart Spaces are equipped with an additional VGA cable for connecting a laptop to the projection system. Many newer devices use video output such as S-video, HDMI, mini-display, and other proprietary formats (such as the iPad) and require a VGA adapter for use in Calvin's Smart Classrooms and spaces.
If you are not sure whether the room you will be using is equipped with the functionality your guest will need, please find out from your guest what equipment they are bringing, what they would like to use in the classroom or space, and contact the HelpDesk in advance for assistance.
I have a long term guest or visiting scholar; can he or she obtain a Novell login?
If you are hosting a long term guest such as a visiting scholar and it is appropriate for your guest to have access to CIT services (Novell login, printing, wireless, e-mail, network drives, etc), please contact the HelpDesk at least a week in advance of the arrival date. We cannot guarantee that all such requests will be honored and may need approval from other departments such as the Provost Office, but the HelpDesk will serve as the original point of contact for assessing the needs of your guest.
