Mailman is a web integrated mailing list software used for creating and managing mailing lists. If you are the administrator of a list, you can manage your list via the admin web interface.

Class & Advising Lists

Mailing lists for all Calvin semster courses and Calvin student advisors are automatically created and populated.

Class Lists
All Calvin semester courses (each section of each course) are automatically provisioned a Mailman mailing list. The instructor and all students enrolled in a course are included on its mailing list. By default, only members of a class can send and receive emails via the class mailing list. The instructor can adjust who is able to send and receive by logging into the list administrative settings. Combined courses do NOT have a single mailing list available; however, each section does have its own mailing list available for use.

Advising Lists
All Calvin advisors automatically have a Mailman mailing that can be used to communicate with their advisees. These lists are automatically populated and updated each day as students change advisors or new advisors are assigned. By default the advising lists are moderated, meaning that if a student/advisee sends a message to the list, the advisor will receive the contents of the message and can reply privately or approve that the message go out to everyone on the list.

Request New Mailman List

Please contact the HelpDesk to request a new Mailman mailing list. You will need to provide the following information:

  • Suggested list name/email address
  • Owner/moderator
  • Members (list Calvin email addresses)
  • Purpose for the list (brief explanation, name of club or program)
  • Sponsor (faculty advisor if the requestor is a student)
  • Restrict postings to members only? (these settings can also be changed once the list is created)

Subscribe to Existing Mailman List

  1. If you know who the list owner/administrator is, you may ask them to add you.
  2. You may also subscribe yourself:
    • Go to the list page in your web browser. The web address is http://list.calvin.edu/mailman/listinfo/listname where listname is the name of the list.
    • Fill in the fields under the Subscribing heading and click the Subscribe button. Depending on how the list is set up, you may be immediately subscribed, need to wait for approval, or receive an email with additional confirmation.

Unsubscribe from Mailman List

  1. If you know who the list owner/administrator is, you may contact them to be removed.
  2. You may also unsubscribe yourself:
    • Go to the list page in your web browser. The web address is http://list.calvin.edu/mailman/listinfo/listname where listname is the name of the list.
    • Under the listname Subscribers heading, enter your email address then click the Unsubscribe or edit options button. You will them be presented with an option and further instructions to Unsubscribe.
