e-mail: Configuring your POP 3/IMAP client to read your ursa/unix mail

CIT requires all access to Calvin e-mail to use the SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) protocol. SSL provides additional security to your username, password, and e-mail content. With the SSL protocol requirement, we can ensure that all your incoming e-mail is routed through the Spam Firewall and scanned for viruses. This is a key step for reducing the amount of spam and viruses that you see in your calvin.edu e-mail.

GroupWise and GroupWise Web Access are already secure. If you use any of these products to read your e-mail there is nothing you need to do. However, if you use a 3rd party IMAP or POP3 e-mail client (such as Thunderbird or Mac OS X Mail) to read your Calvin e-mail you need to make some changes. If you don't make these changes you will encounter problems trying to send and receive your Calvin e-mail.

Please note that the CIT HelpDesk provides support for GroupWise and GroupWise WebAccess for reading your Calvin e-mail. If you choose to use a 3rd party e-mail client please follow these online instructions for configuration.

  1. Set your Incoming mail server to:mailhost.calvin.edu using SSL.
  2. Set your outgoing mail server (SMTP) to: mailhost.calvin.edu and port 587 using SSL.
  3. Port settings:
    IMAP ports: SSL 993
    POP3 ports:
    SSL 995

Authenticate with your username and KnightVision password.

NOTE: CIT recommends that you use the IMAP protocal instead of POP3 when configuring your e-mail client. With the IMAP protocol, you are still able to read your e-mail in one of our supported programs. IMAP leaves a copy of the e-mail on our servers, while POP3 downloads everything locally to your computer leaving you with an empty Inbox.
