Software Requests (PC or Mac)

What are "Delivered Applications"?

Calvin uses a product called Novell ZENworks on PC/Windows computers. This is a desktop management product that allows CIT to do several things including track and categorize inventory, connect to your computer remotely during a support call, deploy important security patches and software upgrades, and assign various software applications and licenses. Most of the software that Calvin users request can be "delivered" to the computer via ZENworks quickly rather than having to wait for a technician to come out and install it with a disc.

Each Calvin computer has a unique computer name which corrosponds to the asset tag number. Your computer's asset tag is a white or silver sticker that says "Property of Calvin College" and contains a bar code and five-digit number. These "assets" all exist in ZENworks, which allows CIT to make various software products available to individual computers over our network.

The various software installers, utilities, and databases that are available to you via ZENworks are called "Delivered Applications". There are some software applications that are often available to everyone, such as GroupWise, the latest Novell client, and Microsoft Office. This way if you are experiencing problems with one of these applications, the HelpDesk can more quickly assist you by instructing you to reinstall a program or offering desk-side support without needing an install disc. There are other applications that are not automatically available to everyone, typically because CIT has a limited number of licenses. These applications need to be requested by contacting the HelpDesk. Once the software has been assigned, you will receive an e-mail directing you to reboot your computer (in order to fully refresh ZENworks) and refer to the instructions below.

What you will see on your screen during the installation and the amount of time it will take will vary depending on the software. If you continue working while the installer is running, you may notice decreased computer performance, as resources are being used to install the new software.

  7. Note: Some installers (ex. Adobe FireWorks or DreamWeaver) are very large and may take a few moments to begin, do not be alarmed if nothing happens at first. If you are not sure whether the installer is actually loading, you can right click on the ZENworks11 icon icon in your System Tray (usually the bottom right hand of your screen) and choose Show Progress. What is Absolute Manage?

CIT is required to maintain the security of your office computer by pushing software updates and patches to it on a regular basis. Sometimes these updates and patches run “silently” and it won't disrupt your work. Sometimes these updates and patches require some action on your part.

Absolute Manage is the program CIT uses to push software and software updates and patches to Calvin-owned Mac computers.

When CIT is pushing software or software updates and patches to you a window will open and you'll see a a list of the available packages.

For more information on what will happen when CIT is pushing updates and patches, click here.
