Vendor/Models
Dell will continue as our primary
vendor for desktop PCs. CIT will continue to specify two models from Dell to meet the
needs of users with basic computing needs as well as those with
higher computing needs.
CIT is pleased that Dell has made it possible for us to provide 17" LCD flat displays instead of the standard 17" CRT monitor.
Desktop Mac

CIT will continue to specify two models from Apple to meet the
needs of users with basic computing needs as well as those with
higher computing needs. CIT will work with our vendor to select
systems which are capable of doing the work and reasonable in
cost.
Laptop PC*

CIT will specify two models from IBM to meet the needs of users with basic computing needs as well as those with higher computing needs. CIT will work with our vendor to select systems which are capable of doing the work and reasonable in cost.

CIT will continue to specify two models from Apple to meet the needs of users with basic computing needs as well as those with higher computing needs. CIT will work with our vendor to select systems which are capable of doing the work and reasonable in cost.
*Laptop Package
CIT will provide the following items as part of each laptop
package:
- Laptop computer with Calvin's standard specifications
- Standard Calvin software (e.g. Office, GroupWise, etc.)
- External optical scroll mouse
- Carry case (choice of briefcase or backpack style)
- Security cable
- A/C power adapter
Any items wanted/needed beyond this laptop package must be paid
for by the department or individual. These items may include an
extra A/C power adapter, a port replicator, or an external keyboard.
Monitors
Through a deal with Dell Computer, we are able to provide 17" LCD flat panel displays with all new computers this year.
CRT monitors already deployed will remain in service for their planned life of 5 years. Where there is a demonstrated need CIT will upgrade CRT monitors to LCD displays.
Floppy Drives
Internal floppy disk drives will not be provided with any new desktop or laptop system in 2005-2006. Hardware vendors have been phasing these out for several years. Most Calvin users report that they never use the floppy drive.
Users are encouraged to transition to other portable options, including CD-RW or USB memory keys.
For users who must continue to use floppies, CIT will provide an external floppy drive. Please contact the Helpdesk to request an external floppy drive.
Small peripherals
CIT provides a complete standard computer system for each user which includes the standard keyboard and mouse. CIT strives to provide hardware that will meet the needs of the majority of users on campus.
CIT will provide upon request standard speakers or an external floppy disk drive.
Other small peripheral items, such as a different mouse or keyboard, USB memory key, etc. are not provided by CIT and can be purchased by the user and/or user's department.
These small peripheral items may be purchased from a variety of sources including, but not limited to, the Calvin Campus store, Corporate Express and local computer stores.
