Desktop PCs

Current Standard (2002-2003)

  • Dell Optiplex GX50 (standard systems)
  • Dell Optiplex GX240 (enhanced systems)

Upgrade Plans
CIT is planning to continue with Dell as our exclusive vendor for desktop PCs. CIT’s policy is to review our selection of desktop vendor every three years. 2003-2004 will be our third year with Dell.

CIT will continue to specify two models from Dell to meet the needs of users with basic computing needs as well as those with higher computing needs. CIT will work with our vendor to select systems which are capable of doing the work and reasonable in cost.
In 2002 CIT began deploying 17” CRT displays with all new computer installations. We plan to continue with this standard for the coming year. Many users are have expressed interest in flat panel displays, however, CIT has found their cost continues to be prohibitive and will deploy them only in situations deemed appropriate.

Desktop Macs

Current Standard (2002-2003)

  • iMac G4/700 flat panel (standard systems)
  • Apple G4/733 tower (enhanced systems)

Upgrade Plans

CIT will continue to specify two models from Apple to meet the needs of users with basic computing needs as well as those with higher computing needs. CIT will work with our vendor to select systems which are capable of doing the work and reasonable in cost.

Laptops

Current Standard (2002-2003)

  • IBM ThinkPad A31
  • Apple Powerbook G4/Titanium

Upgrade Plans
CIT continues to see a surge in requests for laptops. We are currently evaluating our laptop vendor and which model(s) we will be deploying for 2003-2004. We expect to deploy more laptops in 2003-2004 than in previous years.

Floppy Drives: CIT is planning to deploy laptops without an on-board floppy drive. Rather, the floppy drive will be optional as an external USB device which could be connected “on the fly” as needed. This change in our standards would be a cost savings as well as provide a lighter (and perhaps smaller) laptop.

GoCalvin! laptop program: CIT is discontinuing our 3-year-old GoCalvin! laptop program whereby we have provided laptops to a number of faculty each year. Instead, we are “mainstreaming” the laptop program into our normal computer replacement planning process. Faculty interested in receiving a laptop instead of a desktop system should make this request as part of the normal budget planning process. Appropriate rationale for such requests should be included.

NOTE: In some situations, the department may be required to provide a portion of the funding for a laptop or peripherals.
