On June 17, Students will have Google Apps

In additional to Gmail for email, Calvin students will also have access to Google apps which includes Google Docs, and Google Sites. Using their Google account students can now create and save word processing, spreadsheet, and presenation documents. They can even create their own web site.

  1. Where do students go to get help using Gmail or Google Apps?
Google provides support for Calvin students using Gmail and Google apps. If a student has questions about using any of the Google products they should contact Google. There are many places within their Google account for getting help with the many features of Google apps.
  2. How does this impact faculty?
Calvin is a Microsoft Office campus and CIT continues to support Microsoft Office products. Students who use Google apps can export documents to an Office format. Faculty may want to notify their students that all documents turned in should be in an Office format.
  3. Will faculty and staff be moving to Gmail and Google apps?
No. CIT continues to give faculty and staff GroupWise accounts for email and provide Microsoft Office as their office productivity tool.
  4. May faculty request a Gmail account?
CIT is only providing Gmail accounts to students. Faculty may get their own Gmail account by going to http://www.google.com. CIT continues to support GroupWise for faculty and staff email accounts.

Novell drive mappings for students is changing

On Wednesday, June 17, 2009, the letter mapping for student home accounts is changing from F:\ to H:\. This move will ONLY affect the drive mapping and not the file server the students access. The actual move to a new file server will occur at a later time.

History

Back in October, CIT started making changes to Calvin's Novell file server system. These changes affect where faculty, staff and students store and access their files. These changes:

  • Make sharing files between people from different departments easier. We'll easily be able to create a secure folder just for you and your team. This might be 3 people or a committee of 20. This folder is stored on Denali in R:\teams
  • All department common drives will be on the Denali (R:) file server. Granting access to multiple department common drives is simplified.
  • Resolve the current conflict with USB or external drives.
  • Help CIT manage the network.

CIT has already moved most administrative home and department drives to the new file structure and will be moving faculty home and department drives during the summer.
