Resources for Students

Calvin Information Technology provides computing, printing, telephone and
cable television services to the Calvin College community.

Guidelines for Purchasing a Computer

Designed with the incoming student in mind, these pages detail what to look for when considering a computer to use at Calvin.

Calvin provides resident students with high-speed Internet connections, telephones, cable television, access to fax machines, and HelpDesk support services.

Students can connect their personal computers to the Calvin network using either the wired or the wireless network. Please read the Student Network Info & Frequently Asked Questions.

Calvin requires up-to-date antivirus software (not a free trial) on your computer before you can connect to our network. If you need assistance installing an antivirus program, please stop by the HelpDesk.

CIT provides limited support for student's personal computers including:

  • Help connecting to Calvin's network
  • Removal of viruses and spyware
  • Diagnostic services
  • Feature level support for supported software

Computer Facilities

We offer our students a large variety of facilties for technology. Students enjoy access to over 800 computers in campus labs and classrooms. Each residence hall complex has a lab that is open 24/7. Many classrooms are equipped with computers, projection, VCRs and DVD players for teaching and student presentation.

CIT supports both Windows and Mac computers for student use in our labs and classrooms.

A variety of productivity and academic software packages are available for student use in computer labs and classrooms. Calvin uses the Microsoft Office suite of software which includes Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Access.

Students may also purchase hardware and software at a discounted rate.

All students are given campus accounts for learning and communication including Moodle, Novell (for file storage), StudentMail (for e-mail), and a PIN (for card access to buildings).

Each student has 2GB of file storage space on Calvin's Novell network. Log in to Novell from any lab computer or use NetStorage to access your files from off-campus or using Calvin's wireless network.

Wondering about the best location to store your files?

Graduating seniors have access to their Calvin accounts until Oct. 1 of that year.

Computer printers are available in all dorm and apartment computer labs, in the ITC and in most departmental computer labs. Students are given a generous quota of free black and white and color printing for each semester.

As a user of Calvin Information Technology resources, it is the responsibility of each student to be aware of both Calvin's policies on using Calvin's information technologies and federal, state, and local laws that affect his or her use of technology.

A wide array of technology jobs are available for students interested in employment in CIT.
