Guidelines for Purchasing a Computer to use at Calvin

Designed with the incoming student in mind, these pages detail what to look for when considering bringing a computer to Calvin. Guidelines

Services

Calvin provides resident students with high-speed Internet connections, telephones, cable television, access to fax machines, and HelpDesk support services.

Students can connect their personally-owned computers to the Calvin network using ResNet (wired) or CalvinStudents (wireless).

Calvin requires that antivirus software is installed on your computer and up to date before you can connect to our network. Calvin provides Symantec Endpoint for free to all Students. You may choose to download and install Symantec or use another antivirus product of your choosing. Currently we allow AVG, Avast, McAfee, Norton, Sophos and Trend Micro in addition to Symantec Endpoint.

CIT provides limited support for student's personally-owned computers including:

  • Help connecting to ResNet and CalvinStudents
  • Removal of viruses and spyware
  • Diagnostic services
  • Feature level support for supported software

Computer Facilities

Students enjoy access to over 800 computers in campus labs and classrooms. Each residence hall complex has a lab that is open 24x7. Many classrooms are equipped with computers, projection, VCRs and DVD players for teaching and student presentation.

Hardware

CIT supports both Windows and Mac computers for student use in our labs and classrooms.

Software

A variety of productivity and academic software packages are available for student use in computer labs and classrooms. Calvin uses the Microsoft Office suite of software: Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Access.

Students may also purchase hardware and software (including Microsoft) at a discounted rate.

Accounts/Access

StudentMailAll students are given campus accounts for learning and communication including Moodle, Novell (for file storage), StudentMail (for e-mail), and a PIN (for card access to buildings).

Each student has 2GB of file storage space on Calvin's Novell network. Log in to Novell from any lab computer or use NetStorage to access your files from off-campus or using Calvin's wireless network.

Printing

Computer printers are available in all dorm and apartment computer labs, in the ITC and in most departmental computer labs. Students are given a generous quota of free black and white and color printing for each semester.
