Will your students be able to see your course in KV or Moodle?

Wednesday, September 01, 2010

Posted by

When you first start building your semester course in both KV and Moodle, it is not available to students. Both systems are setup this way so you can work on your course before making it available (visible) to your students. Before your course begins you will need to be sure your students can see the course.

KnightVision
When you login to KnightVision and look at your My Course list, you’ll see an (unavailable) next to the course name. To make your course available in KV:

  1. Login to KnightVision and click on your course link.
  2. Go into your course Control Panel.
  3. Under Course Options click on Settings.
  4. Select Course Availability.
  5. Set course available to Yes.
  6. Click on Submit.

Moodle
When you log into Moodle, you will see your courses listed on your My Moodle page. The courses listed in blue are visible (available). Any courses that are still colored light gray are not available to your students. To make your course available in Moodle:

  1. Go into the course you want to make visible.
  2. From the Administration block, click Settings.
  3. Scroll down to the Availability section and select “This course is available to students.”
  4. Make sure to save your changes at the bottom of the page.

If you want help developing your curriculum in KnightVision or Moodle, CIT’s Teaching and Learning team is available to help. Please contact Rob Bobeldyk at x6-6837 or Krista Spahr at x6-6819.

Do you want to combine your course(s) in KV or Moodle?

If you teach multiple sections of a course you can have all your sections combined into one KnightVision or Moodle course. Please consider the following before making this request:

  • All Course combinations will occur in both KnightVision and Moodle. So regardless of which Learning Management System you are using this fall, your courses will be combined.
  • The Gradebook will contain all students from all like-sections of your course.
  • This feature is based on professor not on course. All like courses for a professor will be combined. Thus, a professor teaching the following four courses will have two KnightVision/Moodle courses generated for the Fall.

  • - engl-101a
    - engl-101b
    - engl-231a
    - engl-231b

    Combined (KV):
    - engl-101ab
    - engl-231ab

    Combined (Moodle):
    - engl-101ab_username
    - engl-231ab_username

  • When you choose the options to combine all sections of your course it combines all future sections for like courses as well. If you decide you no longer want KnightVision courses combined please fill-out the form again and request this be discontinued.

Please use the online form Combining sections of a course in KnightVision/Moodle for making this request.

This summer we are offering both in-class and online workshops. Don’t have time to come to a workshop? Take Moodle training online from the comfort of your own office!

Moodle (classroom workshop series)
This classroom-based workshop will teach participants the Moodle basics as well as how to move their KnightVision course(s) from KnightVision to Moodle. Three face-to-face workshops, approximately three (3) hours each, will be offered. Light refreshments will be provided. Seating is limited to fifteen (15) participants.

Moodle (online workshop series)
This two week, online workshop will teach participants Moodle basics as well as how to move their KnightVision course(s) from KV to Moodle. Each day 1-2 new Moodle features will be introduced, then participants will be given time to implement these features into their Moodle course(s). Participants should expect to spend approximately 30 minutes each day on learning activities. The instructor will be available via Moodle as well as by phone or email. An optional 2-hour open workshop session will be offered during the second week. Seating is limited to ten (10) participants.
