Siblings Weekend: February 24-26, 2012

Siblings Weekend is a weekend of fun for siblings, cousins, young friends, and other guests who come to visit a Calvin student!

Of course you can visit anytime, but Siblings Weekend is geared for kids! All meals are included in the registration, and a variety of events and opportunities are available.

LATE REGISTRATIONS after Monday, February 20 are $34. Registration closes on Wednesday, February 22. On-site registration is available beginning Friday, February 24, at the Rooks-VanDellen residence hall front desk.

Helpful Information about Siblings Weekend

Your registration fee ($24 if registered by Feb. 20) covers any and all meals in the dining halls (Friday dinner through Sunday lunch), admission to all of the Siblings Weekend activities* on campus and Eastbrook Lanes for bowling. (*The Rangeela performances on Friday and Saturday are not included--ticket information below).

The visiting siblings will be given special Siblings Weekend ID cards, which will get them into all activities and meals. (Note: if you come earlier than Friday evening or stay beyond Sunday afternoon, additional meals are at your own expense).

You can also use the Siblings Weekend ID card for a 15% discount on all merchandise at the Campus Store (excluding textbooks and computer supplies).

A special discounted registration fee of $11 is available for siblings of Calvin students who live off-campus.  This special registration fee covers all activity options, including bowling, tie-dye (t-shirts available for $5), and on-campus movies, but does not include any meals.

Rangeela will be performed Friday and Saturday night in the Covenenat Fine Arts Center auditorium. Tickets for these performances are purchased separately through the Calvin Box Office at 616-526-6282 and typically go on sale the first week in February.

What happens after we register on-line? Do we have to check-in somewhere when we arrive?

After following the link above to register on-line, the person registering the siblings will receive a confirmation email with helpful information. This email will also be copied to the Calvin student host. A finalized schedule and Siblings Weekend ID card (for meals) will be available for pick-up beginning Friday February 24, anytime after noon in the lobby of the Rooks-VanDellen residence hall, which will be the on-site check-in headquarters for Siblings Weekend.

Note the Cancellation Policy: If you must cancel your plans, please contact us by phone at 616-526-6948 by Monday, February 20, for a full refund. Cancellations received after Monday, February 20, will receive a 50% refund per registrant. Cancellations received after Friday, February 24, are not subject to a refund.

Where do siblings sleep?

Generally siblings stay in the same room as their college student sibling, sacking out on the couch or on the floor. Girls or boys 13 and older should stay in a women's or men's room, as applicable, and the Calvin student host is responsible for making these arrangements (Resident Directors and Resident Assistants can assist as well).

What should siblings bring?

Bring a sleeping bag and pillow, warm clothes, and a toothbrush. You might also consider extra money for off-campus activities or pizza at midnight, and any items related to the options for the weekend, such as clothing to tie-dye at the tie-dye party on Saturday morning (white t-shirts will be sold for $5 at the event and can be charged to your miscellaneous account), gym clothes, swimming suits, or ice skates.

Is this only for younger siblings?

All siblings are welcome, and there is a regularly scheduled Fridays at Calvin on Friday so older siblings might want to combine their visit. Some of the events during Siblings Weekend are geared more for younger siblings, but most are appropriate for all ages. And olders siblings often find it easier to "hang out" with their Calvin sibling without needing as many planned activities.

If the sibling will only be there for a portion of the weekend, is there a discount?

Rather than pricing things individually, we've gone with the "package deal" for the last several years, and it provides a great value for most siblings (and is the easiest for us to administrate). If your sibling is only here for one meal and is not staying overnight or attending any activities, you could consider paying for the meal individually at the dining hall and not registering. Otherwise, please use the registration process. If you have individual questions, we'd be happy to discuss this in person. Call Robin Zylstra at 616-526-6948 or email rjz2@calvin.edu.
