2012-2013

Meet the '12-'13 Honors Fellows students...

Jesse Adams is from Sheboygan, Wisconsin. He is majoring in Biology working with the Phage Program. He hopes to continue with his schooling after Calvin College, earning his Doctorate degree and doing research. He enjoys writing, reading, drawing, and listening to music. The most significant experience in Jesse’s life is when he learned he had Asperger’s Syndrome.  

Eleanore Chan is from Buffalo Grove, Illinois. She is majoring in Speech Pathology. She hopes to work as a speech pathologist, possibly in missions. She enjoys playing the piano and the guitar, as well as badminton and Frisbee. Eleanore recently enjoyed a mission trip to Vietnam and teaching Vacation Bible School in her church. 

Lauren Clark is from Caledonia, Michigan. She is majoring in Speech Pathology and Spanish.  Lauren hopes to become a speech pathologist in a nursing home or assisted-living center. At Calvin College, she is involved with the theater and also works part-time at a local pharmacy. Last summer, she lived in Spain for a short time with a group from her high school. She was elated with the art, history, and culture in Spain and hopes to return for her Spanish major in 2013.

Bethany Cok is from Rochester, New York. She hasn’t decided on a specific major, but is working towards a Spanish minor. She loves traveling and has traveled to England, Germany, Hawaii, and around the continental United States. Lauren also enjoys playing her violin, running, cross country skiing, reading, baking, and photography. She recently went on a service trip to Haiti to help rebuild a school that was destroyed by an earthquake.

Mitch DuBois is from Rockford, Michigan. He is majoring in Engineering and hopes to become a head engineer or engineering manager at a productive company. He is involved in intramural soccer at Calvin College, but also enjoys soccer, long boarding, camping, fishing, hunting, and other outdoor activities. The most exciting experience in Mitch’s life has been zip lining in Costa Rica and going on a safari in South Africa.

Rachel Faber is from Onekama, Michigan, although she has lived in Pennsylvania and other areas in Michigan. She is majoring in Spanish and has chosen Kinesiology as her minor. She hopes to become a physical therapist, working with Latin or Hispanic Americans or traveling to work in Latin America. At Calvin College, she is involved in the theatre, but also enjoys reading, knitting, ceramics, and music. Rachel has lived at camps for most of her life and enjoyed working as a counselor and program staff for two summers.

Caitlin Gent is from Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin. She is majoring in English and Spanish and hopes to be a book or magazine editor, or possibly a music critic. Caitlin has lived in South Carolina, Georgia, and Texas and has traveled throughout the United States and United Kingdom. She enjoys orchestra, writing, drawing, singing, and biking. This past spring, she traveled to England and Wales with her orchestra where she enjoyed learning about the European culture.

Katy Gerber is from Maple Grove, Minnesota. She is majoring in Environmental Science and International Development and hopes to work in sustainable development somewhere in a developing nation. Katy has lived all over the United States, but this past summer, lived on Isle Royale National Park. One of the most significant experiences for Katy was volunteering with Liberian immigrants in Minneapolis and beginning a Bible study/in-school church at her high school.

Colin Gesink is from Denver, Colorado. He is majoring in Computer Science/Digital Communication and Youth Ministry. He hopes to obtain a job at a news station and be involved leading worship in a church. Colin has traveled extensively in Latin America and Europe and enjoys hockey, hiking, skiing, fishing, volunteering, and leading worship. One of his most exciting experiences include when his church bus caught fire on the side of the road in Mexico!

Jakob Gibson is from Holland, Michigan. He is majoring in Computer Science and is not yet sure how he wants to use his degree. He is hoping to enjoy swimming while he is at Calvin College and the experience that college will bring to his life. Jakob lives on 2nd Van Reken as part of the Grassroots community, exploring race and ethnicity more broadly in North America.

Jerry Grieser is from Clarksville, Michigan. He is planning a pre-med program with a major in Biology and a German minor. He hopes to pursue pediatric medicine, possible becoming involved in Doctors without Borders.  Jerry enjoys volunteering in his church’s children’s and junior high ministries, running, reading, and being involved in Student Senate. Jerry recently went on a mission trip to Ukraine and ran a summer camp for orphans.

Susan Hromada is from Lansing, Illinois. She is majoring in Biochemistry and hopes to remain involved in Biochemistry research after her time at Calvin. She enjoys climbing, eating kettlecorn popcorn, and smiling! Susan also enjoyed being a part of the Red River Gorge Wilderness orientation and playing in her high school jazz band.

Emily Jeninga is from Brookfield, Wisconsin. She is majoring in Engineering and looks forward to exploring vocational opportunities while at Calvin. Emily enjoys being involved in JV Volleyball and traveling. She recently attended a youth convention in North Carolina where she made her faith her own and felt God moving in her life. She has a passion for adoption and is thankful for her younger sister who was adopted into her family.

Ansley Kelly is from Edinboro, Pennsylvania. She is majoring in Biology, English, and Pre-medicine. Ansley hopes to use her education to become a pediatric ER doctor. She enjoys running, skiing, and volunteering in medical settings. She is an EMT and recently enjoyed shadowing an ER physician. Ansley is very excited about being at Calvin College!

James Lamine is from Dexter, Michigan, although he has lived in Australia and visited Peru. He is majoring in Computer Science and hopes to become a software developer. He enjoys coding and Ultimate Frisbee around Calvin’s campus.

Nathan Leduc is from Orlando, Florida. He is majoring in Engineering and hopes to go into full-time missions in North Africa and use a job in engineering as a tent-making job. Nathan enjoys traveling and has visited 17 countries, including a recent tour of the United Kingdom this past summer. Nathan also enjoys watching and following the MLB and hopes to be a part of Mu Kappa and Dance Guild while at Calvin College.

Jonathan Lensing is from Pella, Iowa. He is planning a pre-med program, with majors in Biology and Biochemistry. Jonathan hopes to become an orthopedic surgeon after his studies at Calvin. He has moved 14 times and traveled extensively throughout the United States. Jonathan enjoys swimming, lifting, water sports, wood working, and being with friends. He recently traveled to Haiti and was reminded of how fortunate we are and belives it was the most significant experience of his life.

Gabe LePage is from Lookout Mountain, Tennessee. He is majoring in International Development and wants to pursue community development work. Gabe has lived in Kenya and recently spent a month volunteering with A Rocha Kenya. He enjoys rock climbing, reading, and is an aspiring birder.

Leira Lew is from Phoenix, Arizona. She is unsure of her major, but is pursuing the pre-medicine program and possibly minoring in Music. Leira hopes to become a medical doctor, perhaps with Doctors Without Borders. She enjoys teaching Taekwondo classes to little children and camping. She has visited much of the United States and has enjoyed long road trips each summer.

Melinda Loubser is from Pinckney, Michigan. She is majoring in French/Linguistics and International Development. She hopes to work with languages in the mission field, specifically interpreting or teaching. Prior to 2007, Melinda lived in Pretoria, South Africa, Windsor, Ontario, and Novi, Michigan. She enjoys ballet and even hopes to dance with the Ballet Magnificat Company someday, where she recently participated in their summer ballet intensive.

Nathan McReynolds is from Mead, Washington. He is majoring in Physics and Computer Science. Nathan hopes to become a scientific researcher after his education is complete at Calvin. He enjoys astronomy, rock climbing, beach volleyball, ultimate Frisbee, and being an Eagle Scout. Nathan also enjoys traveling and has visited many major cities around the United States.

Michael Messina is from Oak Park, Illinois. He is currently majoring in Sociology. Michael hopes to be very involved while at Calvin and hopes to join Dance Guild, hand bell choir, ballroom dancing, and SAO. Recently, Michael has enjoyed being a drum major of a marching band that won a competition as well as rock jumping on a recent Calvin Wilderness Orientation Trip.

Abby Paternoster is from Ann Arbor, Michigan. She is majoring in International Development and Economics. She hopes to use this training and education to be a part of human trafficking litigation in Burundi or Haiti. Abby enjoys being with other people and participating in student leadership. Recently, Abby traveled to Kenya and Haiti, calling it one of the most significant experiences of her life.

Marissa Ritter is from Lakemoor, Illinois. She is majoring in Special Education and hopes to become a special education teacher, or teaching abroad, preferably in Africa. She enjoys volunteering, working with children, and being involved at her church. Marissa recently traveled to Costa Rica on a mission trip and also to New York City to spend New Year’s Eve in Times Square.

Ellen Rootring is from Cincinnati, Ohio. She is planning a pre-medicine major, hoping to become a doctor, preferably a pediatrician. She enjoys volleyball and ultimate Frisbee intramurals, as well as volunteering. She recently traveled to Cancun, Mexico, where she participated in a mission trip.

Annaka Scheeres is from Boulder, Colorado, but has lived in California, Iowa, Michigan, and Japan. She has visited Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, and many of the United States. Annaka is majoring in Biology and History and hopes to become a professor or ecologist. She hopes to be very involved while at Calvin, hoping to participate in Dance Guild, orchestra, ultimate Frisbee, as well as hiking, biking, and finding gluten-free food on campus.

Mary Schultz is from Aurora, Illinois. She is unsure of her major, but hopes to minor in Mandarin Chinese. She enjoys drawing, sewing, making crafts, and singing. She recently went on a mission trip to Toronto, Ontario where she worked with mentally disabled adults. Mary has also traveled around most of the United States, most recently to Boston, Massachusetts.

Abby Stapleton is from Ada, Michigan. She is majoring in Biology, focusing on pre-medicine.  She hopes to become a physician, specializing in gastroenterology. While at Calvin, Abby hopes to become involved with service-learning opportunities, especially after a very meaningful mission trip to inner-city Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Caitlin Strikwerda is from Hudsonville, Michigan. She is majoring in Biology and hopes to start a career in the sciences, as a doctor or researcher. Caitlin enjoys volunteering and being involved in sports, specifically soccer and skiing. She notes that one of the most significant experiences in her life was traveling to the Rocky Mountains and living in God’s creation for a week.

Jack Van Allsburg is from Grand Rapids, Michigan. He is majoring in Psychology and Linguistics. He isn’t sure of his career path, but is considering academia. Jack enjoys music and film, as well as swimming and running. Recently, he swam in the Sea of Galilee. He also enjoys traveling, visiting Italy, France, Israel, Belize, Honduras, and most of the 50 states.

Kristen VanDeRiet is from Holland, Michigan. She is majoring in Elementary Education and hopes to become a teacher. She enjoys the viola, tennis, volunteering, and traveling. Kristen has traveled to all 48 contiguous states and loves hiking to the tops of mountains.

Elizabeth Walz is from Forest Park, Illinois. She is majoring in Psychology and hopes to continue with pre-Physical/Occupational Therapy to become a physical or occupational therapist. Elizabeth enjoys violin, reading, and hopefully being involved in intramural volleyball. She recently spent ten days in Greece and Italy. She notes that it was the most fun and rewarding experience of her life.
