1999
meet report:
21 swimmers spanning
4 decades of Calvin swimming gathered for the 2nd annual Calvin Alumni
swim meet which is now held each year on Homecoming morning. The format
of the meet was a sprint pentathlon competition, with each swimmer performing
a 50 yard swim in all 4 strokes, followed by a 100 IM.
Some of the age groups
featured intense competition and incredible performances, while others
did what they could; both exemplify the spirit of the alumni swim meet.
We were very pleased to welcome a strong contingent of age 50-59 swimmers,
who helped show the way for the young folks from the 1970's, 80's and
90's.
Some Notable results
from Pentathlon winners in each age group, and other record- setting swims:
Women under 30:
Talitha VanKampen '97 3:37.00
Women 30-39:
Sally Vanette '90 4 events
Women 40-49:
Cassie VanZee-Swierenga '79 3 events
Men under 30:
Alan Speer 2:59.96
Men 30-39:
Gregg "Iggy" VandenBosch '90 3:20.79
Men 40-49:
Ken Mange
'77 3:15.15
Men 50-59:
Glenn Van Werkem
To show the quality
of competition, none of the pentathlon winners managed to win all 5 events,
as other swimmers managed at least one victory in all age groups.
Nathan Vandenbroek
won two of the five events in the men's 30-39 group, but had to settle
for 2nd place, since Alan Speer won by just 0.33 of a second. Nathan will
be tapered and ready next year!
Past Varsity record
holders were in abundance at the meet, but the only swimmer still on the
Calvin varsity record board showed why today's swimmers still can't catch
the "Man of the 1980's", Steve Ruiter, as he set alumni records in both
the 200 and 400 IM with 2:07.99 and 4:36.03 to be named the unofficial
"Swimmer of the Meet". Talitha VanKampen '97 and Sally Vannette '90 also
merited special honors as the top female swimmers.
