Alumni swimmers attacked the record book, breaking 25 age group records in a meet rated 92% fun by the participants (after all, there was a 200 butterfly event). Most swimmers chose selectively from the 11 event menu, but Cory Clausing decided to swim EVERY event in a true iron man performance. For the first time, the women's under 30 age group had the most participants, and they collectively accounted for 9 new records. Dave Baron became the 2nd swimmer to attend the alumni meet while still having an active varsity record on the board*, and he won three events while gaining one new record. Barb Jonker, Dean VanderBaan and Dale DeKorne each set 3 new records in their first try. Erica Smith, Amy DeWeerd, Cory Clausing, Ken Mange and Dave Mange were held to just two records each, so they won't get mentioned. Legacy club member Annette Tuitel went undefeated on the day. Eric Boender established 1 real record, and one phony one, but achieved the distinction of being the only swimmer to top the legendary Steve Ruiter on the alumni record board. Laura Staal picked up a record in her first try. Legacy club member Talitha VanKampen recorded a new mark in the IM. Special thanks go to varsity swim coach Dan Gelderloos for setting up the timing system and James Kalkman, who ran it. Showing that he still has it Coach Gelderloos set a record in the 200 IM. Nate Vandenbroek also added a backstroke record while helping to run the meet. Finally, our alumni office lifeline Rachel Vandenbroek clocked a freestyle record after lunch. Most of us tried to raise the 92% fun quotient by not swimming the long butterfly events**. An unidentified spokes-model said "The introduction of a 25 yard freestyle event really helped. I would have objected to the false dualism of the ancient Greek ideal of a sound mind in a sound body, but this meet did nothing to improve anyone's mind, so it' s O.K." All alumni are encouraged to try again next year. "85% of those who have tried this meet say they won't miss it". * Ed. Note Dave's 100 Free record recently fell to A.J. Penninga at the 2000 MIAA conference championships. Dave still holds the 50 free though. Go Von B!! ** Ed. Note Some of us enjoy suffering and actually swam a 200 fly. |
