Calvin Alumni Swim Meet
Open to all alumni!

Rows of team photos and awards from years past, won by students long departed. These line the trophy cases and hallways of high schools and colleges. I find that somewhat depressing - who wants to be a former athlete?!

A growing number of swimmers spanning four Calvin decades now gather each Homecoming day to throw off the tag of "former" and swim in the present. From great performances to paddling along, many different speeds are included. If you can still swim, it is truly a gift from God, so take it out and use it.

Q: I don't want to make a fool of myself!
A: It's never stopped me.

Q: What is the Alumni Top 100, some kind of secret club?
A: Do you still hold any Calvin records? Well, I don't so this is our chance. By keeping our record board 100 times deep, no one will ever be bumped!

Q: Is the alumni prize treasure chest cool? Will I get a nifty prize?
A: Yes, way cool, and yes again.

Q: What do we do?
A: Arrive in time to warm up and sign up for the events you want to swim. Try to remain calm enough to swim them, bask in the wonder of accomplishment (or watch others do so), go home happy or stick around for other campus events - as though anything could match the swim meet. Then, surf the net about a week later and see which photos are included on the alumni site.

Year 2000 Format: Last year we hit the jackpot with our 5 event pentathlon, and we intend to always keep those events (love those 50's). BUT in the fine tradition of messing with a good thing, I'm making an executive decision to jumble things up again just to keep it fresh.

This year is the "Tribute to (old time baseball player) Wee Willie Keeler" meet. Mr. Keeler's batting strategy was to "hit 'em where they ain't" - the fielders, that is. The emphasis will be on filling holes in our Alumni Top 100 chart by offering bonus points for heretofore-unpopular events. The "winner of the day" in each age group will be the swimmer who scores the most points under this bizarre, unfair, twisted formula: (techno-types, get top 100 list by e-mail to plan strategy)

  • 1st through 5th places in each event = 6-4-3-2-1 points
  • Setting a new alumni age group record = 2 bonus points
  • Participating in a bonus event (listed in bold below) = 1 bonus point

You may swim every event, but to prevent stress related deaths, we will count only your top scoring 4 events in the points standings.

Event 1: 200 Free (bonus)
Event 2: 50 Breaststroke
Event 3: 100 IM/200IM (bonus)
Event 4: Diving Break #1
Event 5: 50 Freestyle
Event 6: 200 Back (bonus)
Event 7: 50 Fly
Event 8: 200 Fly/200 Breast (bonus) Break #2
Event 9: 100 Choice (bonus pts for all but IM) choose any 100, seed by times
Event 10: 50 Back
Event 11: 500 Free/400IM (no bonus pts, they are their own reward)
Event 12: 25 yard freestyle (that's right, just one quick length)

(A sincere P.S. - Don't worry about the points standings; it's only to make it interesting for competitive or quantitative types. Swim for fun; that's the name of this meet.)

Thanks, all, and see you at the meet! Dave Mange '77
