That's a sort of knowledge that can't be reduced to abstract concepts. When people try to capture it, we use images: metaphors, poetry, drama, story – because we're trying to talk about something that's essentially beyond language. When we join together as a community of God's people, we start to learn things “by heart,” so that our thinking is shaped by the language of the kingdom of God .
Learning "with the heart" is a part of what we do in campus worship here at Calvin, because we are people of the book, people of the Bible, and the Bible makes clear that this sort of knowing is important to God. The Holy Spirit intercedes for us “with sighs too deep for words,” and part of our discipline as Christians is learning how to hear those sighs, and how to share the expression of the Spirit with others.
Biblical words for Spirit, such as the Hebrew “ruach” and the Greek “pneuma,” convey breath, spirit, heart, mind, ghost, and wind. When used in the Bible, often fire or a hovering cloud are present, showing that the LORD is near. Join us this year in chapel, LOFT, dorm worship, bible studies and reading groups that help us to understand the work of God's Spirit in scripture and in our lives, and our ability to perceive it, to know the work of the Spirit with our senses and in our hearts and minds.
