Worship Apprentices

Here is the Worship Apprentice team for 2006-2007.

Peter Braswell

Peter Braswell is a junior from Ohio, majoring in Trombone Performance, Music Composition, and Film Studies. He grew up in the church, with his father and step-father both being ministers, and has always been involved in worship, one way or another. At Calvin he has been involved in Jazz Vespers and playing bass for chapels. Peter writes, "Naturally, I am interested in music and the impact music has on our communal and personal worship. Also, I would like to explore the application and effectiveness of film in a worship setting."

Jana Kelder

Jana Kelder is a sophomore music major from Pella, Iowa . She writes, "I've always been a singer-I've been singing pretty much since I could speak-but I discovered my passion for worship in high school, when I was involved in planning and leading chapel services, and I took a class on worship." She has served on worship teams at her church and already at Calvin. Jana is eager to have an opportunity to be even more involved in the spiritual life at Calvin and to learn more about what it means to be an effective worship leader, as well as how to better serve others.

Jeremy Koh

Jeremy Koh is a first-year student, majoring in Philosophy and Music in Worship. He was a worship leader for six years in his church in Malaysia before coming to Calvin. In addition to being a worship leader, he also played guitar and drums on his church's praise team. Jeremy writes that his "passion is to worship in ways that are relevant to a postmodern culture and yet timeless to the truth of the Gospel." He hopes that through the Worship Apprentice program he will become an effective servant to the Calvin community and will also learn how to best serve this community through worship.

Laura McGiness

Laura McGiness is a junior from Midland, Michigan. She writes, "Last semester when I joined the LOFT team as a pianist, I discovered my passion for helping to lead worship as a musician. As a Rhetoric (Communications) and Spanish major, I also enjoy all things related to language, particularly public speaking and writing. I look forward to using my musical and communicative abilities as a WA." Laura is excited about building relationships with the other WAs and leadership teams, and she is eager to use this opportunity to understand more about her spiritual gifts as she prepares to become a college professor or work in full-time ministry.

Elizabeth Ross

Elizabeth Ross has been a dancer since she was 4 years old and grew up attending a variety of churches and denominations in Springfield, Illinois . She loves to sing and play guitar, drums and piano. As a first-year student who is majoring in Spanish and International Development Studies, she is interested in working with youth and hopes to work in an orphanage in a third world country. She looks forward to being a WA, envisioning growth in Calvin's community. Elizabeth writes, "Not only do I want to become a better worship leader, I am also anxious to become a worship student - to learn about different forms and styles of worship and grow as a follower of Christ."

Joe Sung

Joe Sung is a sophomore pursuing a double major in Business and International Relations. Having grown up in Nigeria, Korea, and the Philippines, Joe has developed a love for both the local and global church and hopes to learn more about integrating ministry while professionally pursuing social justice and reconciliation in law or international diplomacy. As a WA, Joe writes that he is "looking forward to serving Christ's body while learning more about the careful structure and planning necessary for successfully directed, holistic worship in order to draw nearer to God in worship as a community."

Kyle Vanderzee

Kyle Vanderzee is a sophomore from Grand Rapids, the oldest of four boys. He grew up in Fifth Reformed Church, and has been involved there since junior high playing bass and guitar, and singing. As a Music in Worship major, he hopes to go on to be a full-time worship leader at a church, with seminary also a future possibility. About his dreams Kyle writes, "I would love to own a sailboat someday, go to Hawaii or live near some mountains. I am passionate about Christ, worship and making music with people." He is excited for all that he will be able to learn and do through this Worship Apprentice experience.

Dale Yi

Dale Yi is a junior from Downey, California, majoring in Psychology and Economics. He has always been passionate about worship. At Calvin, he has already served as a LOFT tech and is excited to be serving the Calvin community by planning and leading worship. Dale writes, “I hope that my Worship Apprenticeship will help me to better understand what it means to serve, to worship, and facilitate worship that is God honoring.” In the future, he hopes to go into missions with his pastor, helping with the formation of a Christian university in Cambodia.

Anna Zondervan

Anna Zondervan is a first-year student from Alberta, Canada. (For those of you who don't know where that is, it's just north of the Montana border.) She is hoping to major in nursing, with a missions minor. The middle child in a family of 5 kids, Anna writes, "My dad is a pastor of a small country church and I love being a PK!" She wanted to become a WA because she is interested in leading worship, and she loves to sing and dance and make music.
