Q: I'm interested in reserving
the chapel for a wedding or other event. Who do I call
about that?
A: All reservations of campus facilities, including the
chapel, are taken care of by the Office of Conferences and Campus Events
(OCCE). Their number is (616)526-6280.
Q: I'd like to get involved with worship leading.
Is becoming a worship apprentice the only way to do that? Who should I
contact?
A:There are many ways to get involved with leading worship
here at Calvin. If your interest is dorm worship, contact your Barnabas
team member. If your interest is leading worship during L.O.F.T., contact
Paul Ryan. If you'd like to get
more involved with chapel, contact Cindy
de Jong. Incidentally, Cindy and Paul also co-direct the worship apprentice
program.
Q: I'm an off-campus student who wants
to get to know other off-campus students interested in worship/Bible study/fellowship/etc.
Who should I talk to?
A: The people to contact are the Nordlings, Robert and
Cherith, in the Office of Christian Formation or the Department Assistant, Lisa Jousma.
Q: I've heard of Baptists, Lutherans, and Methodists,
but what do Reformed Christians believe?
A: As with every denominational tag, it is not difficult
to find two people who refer to themselves with the same title (i.e.,
Baptist, Lutheran, or Methodist) but have very different understandings
of what that means. So also with people who call themselves Reformed.
In general, however, Reformed Christians have a high view of the authority
of Scripture, a strong emphasis on the sovereignty of God in salvation,
a deep appreciation of their calling as Christians to care for God's good
creation, and a high regard for the historic confessions and creeds. As
for the differences, some church historians group Reformed Christians
into three basic camps: those who emphasize Reformed doctrine; those who
emphasize Reformed piety; and those who emphasize the transformation of
culture. (For more on this threefold division, click here.)
There are several Reformed denominations (including the Presbyterian denominations),
and of these, Calvin College is affiliated with the Christian
Reformed Church in North America.
Q: What is the Barnabas Team?
A: For more information about the Barnabas Team, go to their page or to the description found on the Office of Christian Formation page.
