Worship Apprentices (WA)

Kelsey Blodgett

Kelsey Blodgett is a sophomore from Cary, Illinois majoring in Business and minoring in International Relations. She was a member of her church worship team for three years, as well as participating in her local Christian Youth Theater for 10 years. She spent her freshman year involved in Campus Choir and the Calvin Theater Company as well as singing on the worship teams. Although she does not plan to pursue music and worship as a career after college, she is very excited to serve the Calvin community and see how God will shape her heart and mind through her experience as a Worship Apprentice.

Natalie Dunn

Natalie Dunn is a sophomore from Hong Kong who is majoring in Music Composition with a minor in Business. She has always had a passion for music and worship and was part of her high school’s worship leadership team. She loves playing the guitar and the piano and occasionally the drums and the flute. She is very grateful for the opportunity to serve as a Worship Apprentice and is very excited to see what God has in store for her.

Kelvyn Koning

Kelvyn Koning is from McBain, Michigan (a small rural city about 2 hours north of Grand Rapids). He is currently a piano and vocal performance major, but is contemplating a switch to general music and/or perhaps social work or the like. He has played piano for over 10 years in church, high school chapel, and most recently in chapel at Calvin. If it is God’s calling, he hopes to someday be a worship leader (volunteer or professional) and to develop his skills in music and art to one day be a singer-songwriter. A few random facts: he loves plants, animals, and the color purple, is a counter tenor, and really had to resist the urge to put smiley faces in this paragraph.

Nate Maring

Nate Maring is a sophomore from Kalamazoo, Michigan, who is majoring in Political Science at Calvin. He has been participating in worship at his home church since middle school and was very active in his high school’s chapel worship teams.  At Calvin, Nate has participated in both Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble as a percussionist, and enjoys playing the drum set for Calvin’s Pep Band. Eventually, Nate would like to go into law or politics, and hopes to continue as an active participant and leader in worship. Nate is grateful for the opportunity to serve as a Worship Apprentice and is looking forward to serving the Calvin Community.

Timothy Pak

Timothy Pak is a sophomore from Denver, Colorado who is studying business. He’s been a part of his church’s worship ministry since his late middle school years. Tim has a passion for music and enjoys playing the guitar, bass, drums, and singing. He is excited to create genuine friendships with other students and hope to be an example as Christ has been an example in his life. He is thankful for this opportunity to serve in the worship team and looking forward to the different ways God will shape his life and help him grow.

Elle Quist

Elle Quist is a sophomore student majoring in Secondary English Education and Theater. She is most recently from Holland, MI, but grew up in Pennsylvania and Colorado as well. She has been involved with worship teams throughout high school at her church and school, as well as orchestra (cello) and multiple choirs. Besides being involved in music, Elle enjoys good conversations, journaling, tent camping, and adventuring. Elle hopes to someday teach high school English in the inner-city, and possibly do some directing or acting on the side. She is incredibly excited for the opportunity to learn about worship leadership this year, and grow in relationship with God and the Calvin community.

Worship Interns

Laura de Jong

Laura de Jong, originally from St. Catharines, Ontario, is a first year Master of Divinity student at Calvin Theological Seminary. She graduated from Calvin College with an Interdisciplinary Degree in History, Congregational and Ministry Studies, and English. Laura was a Worship Apprentice in her sophomore year, and continued to help lead worship at Calvin throughout her senior year. Last year she was a Worship Intern at Church of the Servant, and has led worship at a number of different conferences and churches. She loves coffee, stories, and all things Dutch. Laura is excited to continue serving the college, working with this year's apprentice team, and witnessing the hand of God in chapel and LOFT.

Kyung Min Hwang

Kyung is a junior majoring in Nursing. She was a Worship Apprentice in 2012-13 and is very excited and grateful to be leading worship at chapel again this year. She was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea till she was eleven. She and her family moved to southern India in 2003 and have been living there until Kyung joined Calvin two years ago. She greatly enjoys and has a passion for worship music, worship leading, walking, deep and meaningful conversations, learning new instruments, and learning about people. Kyung has been involved in worship leading since the end of middle school and is very passionate for it. She worships best through music, so music is a very important part of worship for her. Her primary instrument is piano although she enjoys playing guitar and violin sometimes. She is excited to be leading worship and worshiping at Calvin chapel again and is looking forward to a great and blessed year.

Michael Troy Vander Hoek

Michael Troy Vander Hoek is a senior this year at Calvin. He is majoring in music and minoring in Greek. He has a huge passion for worship and for playing music. It brings him joy to be able to be used by God this year to help Calvin students encounter God in worship and hopefully grow just as much as they will. He hopes to one day use his gifts to bring joy and God's word and peace to the world.
