Letter to the Editor: Tuition

Here’s an issue for Calvin students to protest — the 2017 increases in tuition, fees, room and board. Like clockwork, President Le Roy endorses annual increases of three to four percent; always justified with annual blah blah blah about rising this and raising that and a comparison to other schools so that — guess what — Calvin’s increases appear modest. Same old, same old.

But, what other costs steamroll ever higher? Reminds me of big pharma and EpiPens.

Is it truly Christian to ask parents and students to always sacrifice? Or simply borrow more? Ironically, Ohio Northern University, a law school, thinks not. It cut tuition 25 percent in 2013, bragging on its website, “Less borrowing now means greater long term financial strength for every student.”

Sad that Calvin can’t say the same. At one time Christians believed borrowing was an ungodly form of usury.

If any students do plan to protest — let me know. I’d like to join them.
