Annex Voices is a new vocal jazz group on campus. Founded by Katherine Ryan, Sam Mann and Kaitlyn Farris, this new student organization is spreading its wings on Dec. 6 at their first concert.

For those expecting smooth saxophones and complicated piano runs, think again. This organization relies solely on the power of their voices to bring you soothing blues tunes, swinging syncopation and toe-tapping rhythms.

This isn’t just a small vocal ensemble either — vocal jazz is an entirely different style than your typical Pitch Perfect-esque group. Jazz tunes are full of dissonant chords, complex rhythms and occasional scats, all of which pose major challenges for any group relying solely on their voices to make music. Not only do they have to ask if their harmony sounds right, they must ask if it is supposed to sound right. The written notes don’t always dictate the rhythm; the rhythm must be felt, and to further complicate things, scat is essentially unintelligible syllabic rap.

Despite these challenges, Annex Voices focuses on providing a welcoming environment for anyone looking to improve their ear, voice or other musical talents. There are no barriers to entry; they only meet once a week and they have a blast creating music together.

This group was brought together by the desire to make vocal jazz accessible to every type of person, no matter their musical background or culture. They focus on appreciating the vast variety and creativity of God, by singing an array of vocal jazz styles from all over the world. They desire to use their musical gifts to unite both the Calvin and Grand Rapids community around the themes of love, brokenness, the importance of story and God’s role.

If you are interested in joining the group, contact Katherine Ryan, Sam Mann or Kaitlyn Farris, or come along with a friend in the group. If you want to see the group in action, come to the first concert from 9 to 10 p.m. on Dec. 6 in the Recital Hall.
