Going into this past Wednesday the Calvin baseball team had a 10-22 record on the year and 6-14 record in the MIAA conference. Most recently, the Knights played one non-conference game against the University of Chicago and two doubleheaders against Alma College.

On Tuesday, April 19, Calvin traveled to Chicago, Ill., for one non-conference game. The host Maroons scored in the first inning to take the lead 1-0, but the Knights were able to tie the game back up in the third. Senior Jordan VanderWall led off the third inning with a double and junior Colton Wolfe singled down the left field line to score VanderWall.

In the bottom of the fourth, Chicago picked up one run to take the lead again. The Maroons scored four more runs in the bottom of the seventh from three hits, one walk and one Calvin error, to take the lead 6-1.

The Knights scored their final run of the game in the top of the ninth when junior Mike Kempton singled to allow sophomore Ryan Stewart to score. Calvin lost the game 6-2.

On Friday, April 22, the Knights hosted the Scots of Alma College. First-year student Jonathan Keane started pitching and threw a shutout the first five innings while the Knights led the game 1-0. Kempton scored Calvin’s single run of the game after sophomore Nate DeZwaan drove him in from a double down the left-field line.

The Scots were able to tie the game in the top of the sixth on a hit and a pair of Calvin errors. Calvin was able to stop further scoring after a double-play and an inning-ending groundout.

The Knights were almost able to win the game in the bottom of the seventh but were unsuccessful. Alma scored in the top of the eighth after a walk, a passed ball and a couple base hits. Calvin was unable to score in the bottom of the eighth after a game-ending double-play.

In game two, the Scots acquired 13 hits while the Knights obtained six. Stewart had three of those six hits, first-year student Steven Seager had two and junior Mike Kempton had one. Alma won the game 8-0.

On Monday, April 25, Calvin traveled to Alma to finish the four-game series. The Scots swept the Knights 6-1 and 4-3.

Calvin scored their only run of the first game in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly by Wolfe. Junior Sawyer Howard took the loss after 5.1 innings of work.

Alma led the second game 2-0 for the first five innings, but junior Matt Kotva singled in the top of the sixth to score Wolfe. However, Alma took two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to lead 4-1.

In the top of the seventh first-year student Beau Redfield and VanderWall each singled to allow two runs to score for the Knights. Neither team would score for the remainder of the game.

Calvin will travel to Olivet College in a conference doubleheader Friday, April 30. The first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
