“This semester we decided to bring something new to the table with student organizations at Calvin,” said Eric Brower, president of the newly founded Sports Management Club. “A group of six of us were helped along in our ideas for the club by our two advisors, Dr. Bolt and Dr. Timmer.”

The Sports Management Club’s main goal is to seek and develop a strong community for students interested in the field of sports management and other related areas. The club creates learning opportunities with local teams and organizations and constantly pursues new relationships within the sports industry to grow and cultivate.

“We have traveled to Griffins games hosted at the Van Andel arena and discussed with members of marketing there about game day promotions and advertising tactics they use to increase their audience,” stated Brower. “Even more recently, we went to the Palace to meet with front office executives and the general manager of the Pistons about their sports management strategies. Not only did we watch the Pistons play an incredible game of basketball, but we also gained new connections and a lot of applicable business knowledge.”

Currently the club has over 30 members and meets at least once a month to pitch and plan new ways to connect with the sports community surrounding Calvin College. The club provides real-world connections and advice for students and has been very successful thus far.

As the six founders of the club continue their leadership, they hope to find more events with business and even some alumni that have made a career within sports management.

“One thing I love about the Sports Management Club is the overall impact and ability it has to prepare members for the job market after college,” admitted Brower. “Volunteer experience and internships in relevant fields are huge as a student approaches graduation. Our club has the ability to provide our members with all of those things so they are ready to face the real world when they leave Calvin.”
