Calvin is a place where students are encouraged to challenge themselves and learn valuable skills for a wide range of real life experiences. The Knight Investment Management club is an example of students taking initiative and challenging themselves and their peers to learn new skills to apply to real life circumstances.

The main goal of the Knight Investment Management club (KIM) is to give students practical real life investing experience while also engaging in real time analysis asset allocation and stock picking to beat the market for their client.

“KIM is a great way for students of all different majors to learn about stocks and money management before the real world hits,” stated Bret Habura, the CEO of the club. “Calvin requires no experience to join the club and gives the opportunity for any student to understand how to manage money before they graduate in a non-intimidating way.”

The KIM student organization received approximately $1.2 million of Calvin’s endowment fund to manage. Within the club, members are placed into different sectors to research and learn about various stocks and their growth potential. Once fully examined, each sector pitches a stock to invest in to the entire organization. If the majority of the club votes on the stock presented, the club will buy the stock.

“First and foremost, we want to educate our members,” Habura said, “but of course we also strive to provide a favorable return for the Calvin College Investment Committee.” The organization has been steadily increasing in student involvement and investment decisions for Calvin since its start in March of 2012.
