This past Friday, the Calvin College women’s basketball team walked on to the court with full hearts. Unfortunately, the team ended their season on a low note.

The Knights played Trine University at Hope College’s DeVos Center, with the intent of playing the Hope Flying Dutchmen for the second time last week in the final round of the MIAA National Tournament. However, the Knights fell to the Thunder 57-45.

Although the loss was devastating for the Knights, Trine was hitting shots that Calvin was unable to hit. Calvin only scored 45 points, which is the second time that the team has been held to under 50 points in a game this season.

The women’s basketball team has had a successful season, despite their loss to Trine. Ending their season with a 20-6 record, the Knights feel proud of what they have accomplished.

Five out of 17 players on the Calvin team are finishing up their senior season, and they have left their mark on the Calvin women’s basketball program. Calvin says goodbye to Kally Verkaik, Abby Springer, Tiffany Karger, Natalie Kmet and Jeana Sybesma.

Coach John Ross has been proud of his team leaders this season and what they have brought to the court. The seniors have had an instrumental part the team’s successes and have held the team together in the midst of their losses as well.

“This may sound cliche, but definitely don’t take the time for granted,” said Springer when asked what advice she had to give to other athletes. “The four years I played flew by. Enjoy every second because you never know when your last game could be.”

Calvin athletics has a knack for making memorable seasons and lasting impressions. The relationships the girls have made are some of their favorite parts of the basketball program.

“While I’ll still remember the great success and memories we had on the court, I think I’ll remember and cherish all the time I had with those girls the most,” Springer said. “Sixteen of my best friends that would do anything for you at anytime — what more could you ask for?”

The Calvin women’s basketball team has had a successful season in more than just a winning record. The players and Coach Ross thank their seniors for leading the lady Knights in so many ways.
