Last Saturday, the Chimes staff soundly defeated the student senators 4-1 on the Phi-Chi fields for the second annual Chimes vs. senate showdown.

The game started off with student body president Jona Eigege scoring the first goal into the far right corner of the net. However, the Chimes staff quickly bounced back with Chimes videographer Dan Ferrell scoring the first goal for Chimes with an assist by sports editor Brian Exner.

Exner went on to score another three goals for the Chimes staff, including a lob shot from 30 yards and a shot after bypassing both the defenders and goalkeeper.

“I was a little nervous when they scored the first goal, but when I got the pass off to Dan for our first goal I felt more confident in our ability to score,” said Exner.

Exner’s favorite goal was his lob shot over goalie and executive vice president Laura Sterenberg.

“I got the ball, and I was looking for a passing opportunity, but nobody closed down on me. I hadn’t shot from this far out, and I wanted to test the keeper, so I just let it sail right into the top shelf,” said Exner.

Though his team crumbled at the feet of Chimes, Eigege applauded the strong effort of the senators.

“I’m really proud of the way senate played. I think we did well but were just unlucky,” said Eigege. “We created a lot of chances, but they just didn’t go in. But I think Chimes played really well, too.”

Nonetheless, Eigege was proud of how his team handled defeat.

“We were positive in the face of many many obstacles and inequalities,” he said.

Chimes editor-in-chief Lauren DeHaan believed that the game was an excellent bonding experience for both teams.

“The game was a great way to connect two of Calvin’s most influential student orgs,” said DeHaan. “I’m glad that everyone was a good sport. Everyone came with a good attitude and did their best. I look forward to competing with student senate in the future.”

Student senator Joy Christopher enjoyed the time spent between both teams.

“I think it was my best Saturday I’ve spent at Calvin,” she said.

Vice president of public relations Jonathan Manni also viewed the game as an opportunity to improve senate’s relationship with Chimes.

“One of the biggest goals throughout the game was to get a better relationship with Chimes,” said Manni. “That was really the game winner.”

For senator Griffin Brent, the game was a way of strengthening the student organization community.

“I think one of the keys to success in any student org is consistency,” said Brent. “So when you have people who have been in an org multiple years, it really adds to the experience, and I think with senate and Chimes it encourages more people from both orgs to come back.”

Looking ahead to next year’s game, Manni promised that senate would be ready.

“I think we’re implementing a pretty strict training regimen that started the day after the game and will continue through to the last day of the school year,” he said. “With that in mind we’ll all be ready to come out strong.”

The next sporting event between both organizations will be a dodgeball game in the spring semester.
