Women’s soccer stuck to their word earlier this season and put in three solid performances to notch four wins without conceding a goal. They scored 10 goals in the process and are now tied with Alma for third in the conference with 12 points.

Sophomore Carly Veenstra helped the Knights get back on the winning track with an unassisted goal against Albion in a 1-0 effort.  From that point, six other Knights added goals to their resume. Junior forward Paige Capel led the team in goals over the four-game stretch with a hat trick in the latest game against Olivet, and sophomore midfielder Allie Corp had a brace against Kalamazoo.

“Scoring goals and winning games is feeding us more energy and helping us to continue our winning streak to bring us back up to the top,” said Corp after she was asked how these multi-goal games have affected the mood among the team.

Defensively, first-year Jenna Shelton has recorded 12 saves during the current win streak.  Junior defender Jaimie Verbal, one of the players who held down the back line in front of Shelton, commended her teammates for their effort:

“Our first couple losses early on in our season came from a lot of passing errors, lack of movement and communication, but now we are finally getting the feel of how to play together and play ‘our’ game.  Defensively it is always great to have a shutout, but knowing it is a team effort is what is most important.”

Next up for the Knights is the rivalry match-up on Saturday, October 4 at 12 p.m. Going into the match, the Hope Flying Dutchmen are on top of the conference with 18 points. Calvin averages 1.5 goals a game while conceding .89 goals and Hope scores 1.9 goals while conceding .99 goals.
