Last Wednesday, the men’s soccer team hosted No. 6 Olivet, taking the game 3-2 and joining Olivet for the top spot in the MIAA.

The Knights started the game hot — junior Zach Willis scored the first goal of the game at the 8 and a half minute mark with a header off a cross from sophomore Sean Broekhuizen. Olivet was quick to return the favor though and flicked a shot into the net only 14 seconds later. The score remained tied until the 44th minute, 45 seconds before halftime, when sophomore Travis Vegter scored off a cross from Willis bringing the score to 2-1.

Calvin was able to capitalize on a through ball with senior Chris Nance scoring on breakaway. Senior Joe Broekhuizen was credited with the assist in this 61st minute goal. Once again, Olivet was able to score close behind off a rebound shot. No more goals were made after this leaving Calvin to win 3-2.

Senior Jared Rushlau had four saves and Calvin outshot Olivet 25-18.

The team then traveled to Trine last Saturday and won 4-0. Joe Broekhuizen scored the first goal in the ninth minute from a pass by freshman Sam Hanover. This was the only goal of the half.

In the second half, Vegter scored off a pass from freshman Taylor Pruis. 30 seconds later, Pruis chipped in a shot off a pass from Vegter. With five minutes left in the game, junior Zakk Rankin scored with a header off a direct kick from senior Kyle Vela.

The Knights outshot the Thunder 12-8 and Rushlau made four saves. The Knights are now on an eight-game win streak. They play again on Saturday when they host Hope at noon.
