Men’s soccer extends winning streak to seven games
The men’s soccer team continued its winning streak this week, adding two more wins to its overall record.
On Tuesday, the men’s soccer team came out strong against Adrian, taking the game with a 3-1 win against the visiting Bulldogs at Calvin’s Zuidema Field. The Knights led the game at halftime 2-0 with goals by senior Joe Broekhuizen and junior Zach Willis.
Adrian later cut the Calvin lead in half on a goal in the 82nd minute, but the Knights put the game away with a goal by freshman Taylor Pruis in the 85th minute of play. Picking up assists on the afternoon for Calvin were Willis and sophomores Travis Vegter, Sean Broekhuizen and Adrien Mary. Calvin outshot Adrian 31-3 throughout the afternoon.
If one win this week wasn’t enough, the men’s soccer team pulled off a 3-0 win over Alma on Saturday. Vegter split a pair of Alma defenders and sent a through ball far side to high school teammate, Willis. Willis outran the defense, and beat Alma goalkeeper Graham Wallace far side to give Calvin a 1-0 lead.
Despite having the lead, Calvin kept up the pressure. Vegter had a two more shots, both of which went left of target. In the 23rd minute, the Knights swung the ball to the near side senior Chris Nance. Nance sent a low cross to the back post. Willis was right in place, scoring his fifth goal of the season and giving the Knights a 2-0 lead.
Calvin did not wait long to open the scoring in the second half. 13 minutes into the second half, junior Ben Honeycutt passed a ball to Nance on the fall side of the 18-yard box. Nance chipped Wallace, scoring his second goal of the season. The Knights held their 3-0 lead till the end.
The two wins by the men this week give them a new overall record of 7-3-0 and 6-1-0 in the MIAA standings. They are currently in second place in the MIAA behind Olivet. The Knights play again on Wednesday when they host the Comets of Olivet. The Knights lost to Olivet earlier this season when they gave up a four goal advantage to lose 6-5.
