Women’s soccer evened its record to 1-1 after a win over Illinois Wesleyan.

The Knights hosted the Titans of Illinois Wesleyan on Friday night, winning 2-1. The women’s soccer team is now 1-1 after this game played at Grand Rapids Christian’s Eagle Stadium.

In the 17th minute, senior Francesca Smith scored first for Calvin. Freshman Sydney Kinney had a free kick which she sent into the box to freshman Taylor TenHarmsel who passed it on to Smith. Smith was at the corner of the six-yard box and she one-touched the ball to the far post. This was her first goal of the season.

Calvin maintained its lead through the first half.

The Knights were able to add onto their one goal lead in the 79th minute. Senior Liz Cancel passed to TenHarmsel who was able to chip the ball over the goalie into the net.

With five minutes left, the Titans had a penalty kick which was taken by last year’s team leading scorer Emily Hinchman. She put the ball wide of the net though maintaining Calvin’s 2-0 lead.

The Titans scored two minutes later by Tillie Bill who shot from the top of the box over junior goalie Ashton Hearn’s head. The Knights were able to hold on for the last three minutes to win their first game of the season.

Hearn made five saves for the Knights. Offensively, Calvin had four shots but only two were put on net and those were goals.

Calvin plays again on Thursday against Trine at home at 4 p.m. This will be their first MIAA conference game of the season.
