paintings by Jered Sprecher

March 20 - April 25, 2009

From March 20 to April 25, the Center Art Gallery and Department of Art and Art History at Calvin College present INDEX paintings by Jered Sprecher. Drawing on the vast number of images in contemporary society, Sprecher collects and re-contextualizes these images in his work. He considers himself a "hunter and a gatherer" who is "constantly accumulating images produced by the people and cultures around me." He recognizes the futility of trying to impress meaning or control over the images, and as a result his work is characterized by an "eclectic aesthetic" where each painting is defined by a different style or concept. He writes "my paintings hold no single allegiance, but are constantly shifting from one form of representation to another."

Jered Sprecher received his MFA from the University of Iowa and currently teaches in the School of Art at the University of Tennessee.
