SOUTHSIDE: REPACKAGING THE AMERICAN CITY
Photography by Jon Lowenstein

September 4-29, 2007

From September 4-29, the Center Art Gallery at Calvin College presents Southside: Repackaging The American City, a selection of work by photographer Jon Lowenstein. The exhibition features images from Pocket town, a project that the artist has been working on for a number of years. The work explores the nature and character of a neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago, as redevelopment poises to change the cultural and physical landscape.

He writes, "Driving down Martin Luther King Boulevard on Chicago's South Side change is evident everywhere. Signs advertising new condominiums dot the landscape and city blocks that once stood vacant are being completely replaced with new prefabricated housing and recently opened chain stores." Lowenstein will be visiting in late September to present a public talk, visit classes and speak with students from a variety of disciplines. Support for this visit comes from The Office of the Provost and The Department of Art and Art History.
