Michele Wood

February 28 - April 19, 2014

From February 28 - April 19, the Center Art Gallery at Calvin College presents VISUAL ESSENCE, by artist and illustrator Michele Wood in the Hallway Gallery. Michele Wood is an artist whose paintings are couched in the unique visual language of rich African symbols. As a painter, illustrator, designer and writer, she has gained wide recognition in the United States. She has been honored with the prestigious American Book Award for her first book, Going Back Home, a work inspired by her personal journey to the American South, and the American Library Association’s 1999 Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award for her book, I See the Rhythm, an inspiring celebration of African American music. Her work, which has been exhibited in major venues nationally, reflects an essential sense of history and place.

This exhibition includes work from Wood’s 1998 book, I See the Rhythm and her most recent 2011 book, I Lay My Stitches Down. She lives in Indianapolis, Indiana.
