Seeing Christ in the Darkness - Georges Rouault as Graphic Artist

January 4 - February 16, 2013

From January 4 - February 16, the Center Art Gallery at Calvin College presents Seeing Christ in the Darkness - Georges Rouault as Graphic Artist. The exhibition features over 40 works on paper that demonstrate Rouault's ability to identify with peoples' sufferings and illustrate the salvation Christ brought out of darkness. Organized from the collection of artist and collector Sandra Bowden, the exhibition includes a large portion of the Miserere series, originally titled Miserere et Guerre ("have mercy," a quotation from Psalm 51, and "war"), that was commissioned in 1914 at the start of WWI. Other works are included from the Fleurs du Mal ("Flowers of Evil") and Passion series.
