Presence/Absence
New Work by Bruce Herman
January 5 - February 5, 2011
From January 5 to February 5, 2011, the Center Art Gallery at Calvin College presents "Presence/Absence - New Work by Bruce Herman." The exhibition features three-dozen paintings, mostly abstract, which constitute a new direction for the Gloucester, Massachusetts based artist. Having worked in the figurative tradition for years, Herman’s style started to evolve over the past decade through a creation-based exploration of the visual experience. Coupled with his interest of the rugged landscape around his home in Cape Ann, he began a new group of paintings.
Herman acknowledges being drawn to the elements of the Atlantic coast, but admits to having “tried and failed countless times to capture this place in a straightforward landscape painting.” Striking out with this new style, the resulting work reflects an attention to texture, color and form that seeks to record the presence of the landscape and also the great absence of things passing.
