About the Artist
After more than 20 years of teaching design at Calvin College, Frank Speyers pushed himself beyond his comfort zone and began to explore plein air painting. Having spent years "pushing pixels," Frank was drawn to a more direct visual experience where he could engage a new set of problems, without the mediation of a computer. He had worked in pastel, gouache and acrylic, but never with oils, nor with the constraints of open-air painting. In 2007 he started taking instruction and experimenting with this method, and in 2008 he spent the year, including his fall sabbatical, working on this series of paintings set along M22 in Michigan's Leelanau County.
